William Blake's artist writing

I work with writers to clarify, strengthen, and bring forward the full force of exactly what they are trying to say.

I am a freelance English-language editor with over four decades of experience teaching English at all levels—from 8th grade to PhD-level seminars. Alongside my work as a teacher, I have published books and journal articles in literary and cultural studies, and I bring that combined experience to my work as an editor.

My approach goes beyond surface correction. I focus on clarity of thought, strength of structure, and the preservation of each writer’s voice—helping you shape your work into its most effective form.

Academic Editing Services

I specialize in academic editing for scholarly writing, including work by international researchers writing in English.

Typical projects include:

  • journal articles
  • doctoral dissertations
  • book manuscripts
  • conference papers

Every piece of writing is trying to become something.

My role is to help it arrive there more clearly.

A sentence is never only a sentence; it is a spacing between departure and arrival. Writing is often the outward sign of something else happening beneath the surface. Sitting down to write is for some a source of dread while for others it is an opening of the floodgates. Editing listens for the hinge between what a sentence says and what it is trying to become.
The proposition posits immediacy, but the sentence is by definition mediation. We rarely know what we want to say until we actually try to say it. Writing is always a collective phenomenon, no matter how isolated the writer. Writing functions as the figural synthesis of the heterogeneous elements of identity.
